Driver turns himself in after fleeing from crash into Loveland restaurant patio

LOVELAND, Ohio — The driver that fled after crashing into the outdoor patio of a Loveland restaurant Friday night has turned himself in, Loveland police said.

The man, who police have yet to identify, was driving his pickup truck around 9 p.m. and hit the tented patio outside Paxton's Grill, which is located near the Loveland Bike Trail. The crash happened as Paxton's was hosting a Cinco de Mayo party.

The crash injured three people who were taken to Bethesda North — all of whom were expected to be OK.

Those that ran over to help people in the minutes just after the crash said it was miraculous that no one was killed.

Barry McFall, who was just around the corner at Narrow Path Brewing, said a man burst through the door yelling for people to come help — at first, he expected a shooting.

"Somebody come running down the bike trail saying everyone needs to help and we ran," McFall said. "Everyone ran and basically we ran toward Paxton's Grill and basically seen the awning in the middle of the road."

Though no one was seriously injured in the crash, those surrounding Paxton's applauded and cheered for the first responders who not only arrived quickly but helped to clean up and remove the debris from the shattering patio awning. The crash site was cleared by 10:30 p.m.

Friday night, police identified the suspect's vehicle, and Saturday police identified him.

Police said now that he turned himself in, investigators are working with the Clermont County Prosecutor's Office and multiple charges are pending.

Though Paxton's patio was destroyed in the crash, the restaurant was able to reopen Saturday at 4 p.m.

"Our entire team is so grateful that there were no serious injuries from the unfortunate accident Friday night involving our patio," Paxton's grill posted on Facebook.

Paxton's has yet to announce any plans on when the patio is set to be rebuilt or when it could potentially reopen as summer approaches. Despite that, the restaurant said it would keep the community posted on plans.
