Two children are in critical condition following a fire early Thursday morning at an apartment complex in Winton Hills.Assistant Cincinnati Fire Chief Matt Flagler says an initial call was received around 5:30 a.m. regarding a fire in the 600 block of Strand Lane.Flagler says the first crew arrived within four minutes and found heavy fire on the first floor of an apartment building. As initial crews were arriving, additional 911 calls were coming in regarding children being trapped in the building.Officials say a "very aggressive search" was initiated, which led to firefighters finding two grade school-aged children and removing them from the building.According to Flagler, the children have been transported to the hospital in critical condition. "It's a tough morning," Flagler said. "Everyone here is a mom and a dad, and we empathize with the families that are affected this morning."Authorities say it is not yet known what caused the fire, though there is no reason to believe the fire is suspicious at this time.Flagler said a neighboring unit sustained minor damage and added that no firefighters were injured."This was an extremely aggressive operation, we knew there were people that needed our help and our firefighters will stop at nothing to help them," he said. Close to 60 firefighters responded to the scene Thursday, plus additional EMS resources.
