Inmate dies after being assaulted by cellmate at jail

An inmate is dead and another has been charged after an assault at the Kenton County Detention Center last week.It happened Sunday, May 14 around 3 p.m. when Kenton County police responded to the detention center for a report of a person not breathing.When they got to the scene, they found the person was assaulted by another inmate.Police said an investigation revealed 32-year-old Johnathan Maskiell, from Vanceburg, assaulted 61-year-old John Daulton, from Covington, while the two were in a cell together.Daulton was taken to the University of Cincinnati Medical Center, where he died days later on Sunday, May 21.Maskiell has been charged with assault in the first degree and is currently still at the Kenton County Detention Center on a $100,000 cash bond.Police said they are working with the Kenton County Commonwealth Attorney's Office to upgrade the charge against Maskiell.The investigation is ongoing, police said.This is a developing story, WLWT will continue to update this story with more information as it comes in.
