The Cincinnati Police Department is making changes to its policy for police pursuits. The pursuits will only be permitted for violent felony offenses. Pursuits for misdemeanor offenses are not authorized. A spokeswoman said, “The department continually revises our procedures to make sure public safety and the safety of our officers are our top priority.”Veteran police officer and president of the FOP, Dan Hils, support the revision and said it’s becoming a national trend.“The agency has to protect itself and protect its officers from lawsuits and also from injury that is unnecessary,” Hils said.Cincinnati mayor Aftab Pureval embraced the policy revision. He said this change is consistent with his agenda to make all 52 neighborhoods safe He said he has always prioritized health and safety and opportunities to empower the police.“This change is consistent with that agenda and I’m grateful for the partnership with the interim chief (Teresa) Theetge and the city manager in order to accomplish it," Pureval said.In 2020 police were involved in a pursuit. The suspect being chased struck and killed two senior citizens and injured two other bystanders. The family of the two senior citizens is suing the Cincinnati department.
