A cougar who was rescued after becoming trapped in a California wildfire received special care at an Ohio zoo.Captain Cal was injured in the Zogg and August Complex fires in California that happened in 2020. He received care at the Oakland Zoo before arriving at the Columbus Zoo.Captain Cal had three claws removed last spring to help him continue to heal from the injuries he sustained in the wildfire.Complications continued to arise from his injuries and the zoo's care team, as well as a surgeon from The Ohio State University College of Veterinary Medicine, decided to partially amputate the tips of several more of Captain Cal's toes which were rotated into an abnormal position and causing discomfort.Weeks after his surgery, the Columbus Zoo provided an update saying Captain Cal has now returned the the zoo's North America region from the animal health center and was reunited with his adoptive sisters, Goldie and Poppy. Zoo officials said his adoptive sisters immediately welcomed him back.
