The heartwarming Sundance hit "CODA won best acting ensemble while Will Smith and Jessica Chastain took top individual honors at Sunday's Screen Actors Guild Awards.
Smith took home best male actor in a film at the 28th SAG Awards ceremony – the first major award show of 2022 – and called it "one of the greatest moments of my career right now, being called for “King Richard' sitting next to Venus Williams." Smith plays the tennis champion's father, who "is a dreamer like no one you’ve ever known. He has a power of belief that borders on insanity - and sometimes tops over the border, which is absolutely necessary to turn something impossible possible."
Chastain nabbed best female actor in a film for "The Eyes of Tammy Faye." "I’m completely stunned," said the actress, who was victorious over the likes of Lady Gaga and Olivia Colman in a stacked category for lead female actor in a movie. She struck an inspirational tone when speaking to her fellow thespians: "For those of you who are struggling and feel unseen, you are one job away. I promise."
"CODA" cast member Troy Kotsur, who snagged best male supporting actor in a film, made history as the first deaf actor to win an individual SAG award while "West Side Story" star Ariana DeBose is the first Latina actress to receive a film honor. "My heart’s beating in my chest right now. It’s taken a long time for me to be comfortable calling myself an actor," said DeBose, a "Hamilton" alum who started on the stage before she moved to the screen.
