Bengals linebacker Logan Wilson underwent surgery to repair a torn labrum that he played with during Cincinnati's Week 17 win against the Kansas City Chiefs in addition to the team's four playoff games, according to a report Sunday via Twitter from ESPN's Jeremy Fowler.
Wilson was carted off the field with the shoulder injury during the Bengals' Week 13 loss to the Los Angeles Chargers. He missed the next three games but returned in the team's penultimate regular-season game.
The Enquirer's Charlie Goldsmith wrote in January that Wilson didn't know if he'd be able to return or need surgery.
From Goldsmith on Jan. 6:
When Wilson met with the medical staff, he heard that he most likely needed surgery, but that there was a chance he wouldn’t. Wilson focused on the small possibility that he’d be able to play again this season.
“I just thought to myself, that’s all I need is that little percentage,” Wilson said. “They’re saying there’s a chance that I cannot have surgery so I’m gonna do everything in my power to rehab it the right way … Just took it one day at a time and here we are.”
Wilson made his surprising return in Sunday’s win over the Kansas City Chiefs. Five days before the game, Bengals head coach Zac Taylor said that Wilson was “very doubtful.” Wilson remembers talking to his physical therapist early in the week about wanting to see how he felt after one more massage.
Afterward, Wilson felt the soft tissue pain in his right shoulder ease. Then in the biggest game of the season, Wilson played all 61 defensive snaps and called the signals out of the huddle for the Bengals defense.
During the postseason, Wilson recorded 39 total tackles - including four for losses - with a QB hit and an interception.
His interception of Tennessee quarterback Ryan Tannehill - one of the biggest in Bengals' playoff history - halted the Titans' drive with 20 seconds left in the playoff win in Nashville to help set up Evan McPherson's game-winning field goal.
A holding penalty called against Wilson in the final moments of Super Bowl 56 aroused the ire of many Cincinnati fans.
