Homecoming for baby who almost didn’t survive

A South Carolina family is sharing an adorable video of their two young children meeting their little brother for the first time. What makes the meeting so special is that the little boy had surgery to get a pacemaker when he was just 23 hours old and then spent the first couple weeks of his life in the hospital.Favio and Emily Dawkins say when Emily was 20 weeks pregnant, doctors diagnosed baby Lukas with a complete heart block. Favio Dawkins said the family went months not knowing what the outcome would be for their baby boy or if he would even survive. He said they had doctor appointments every week to check Lukas' heart. Favio Dawkins said babies with a heart rate as low as Lukas' usually develop fluid buildup and become very sick and some do not survive. Lukas was born on Jan. 24 with a low heart rate and, at 23 hours old, doctors decided he needed surgery to place a pacemaker. The family was told their stay at the Medical University of South Carolina would be long, but remarkably, Lukas got to come home after just two weeks. "Lukas is doing amazing and it's all thanks to God and all the prayers from friends and even strangers," Favio Dawkins said. "This for sure is a miracle."The video above shows the family surprising Gemma, 3, and Aiden, 1, as the doorbell rings and Lukas is on the doorstep. It was something the Dawkins family wasn't sure they would get to do. Check out the video above, which was sent to sister station WYFF through ulocal.
