In the first real look at the likely contenders at this year's Academy Awards, "House of Gucci" and "The Power of the Dog" lead the way with three Screen Actors Guild nominations each.
The nominees for the 28th annual SAG Awards (airing live on TNT and TBS, Feb. 27 at 8 p.m. ET/5 PT) were announced Wednesday morning on Instagram Live by Rosario Dawson and Vanessa Hudgens. In an already-weird Oscar season because of omicron, the SAGs take on new influence and importance – not just because actors are the largest voting body in the Academy but also because of general disinterest in the recent Golden Globe Awards.
"Power of the Dog" and "West Side Story" – which both picked up Globe wins for best drama and best musical or comedy, respectively – were shut out of the best cast category (the SAG equivalent of Oscars' best picture). Instead, "Belfast," "CODA," "Don't Look Up," "Gucci" and "King Richard" will be competing for the top prize.

The best male actor race includes Javier Bardem ("Being the Ricardos"), Benedict Cumberbatch ("The Power of the Dog"), Andrew Garfield ("tick, tick ... BOOM!"), Will Smith ("King Richard") and Denzel Washington ("The Tragedy of Macbeth"). Up for best female actor are Jessica Chastain ("The Eyes of Tammy Faye"), Olivia Colman ("The Lost Daughter"), Lady Gaga ("House of Gucci"), Jennifer Hudson ("Respect") and Nicole Kidman ("Being the Ricardos").
Gaga's co-star Jared Leto is up for supporting male actor with Ben Affleck ("The Tender Bar"), Bradley Cooper ("Licorice Pizza"), Kodi Smit-McPhee ("The Power of the Dog") and Troy Kotsur, who along with his deaf "CODA" castmates are the first disabled performers to be nominated in the awards' 28-year history.
Globe winner Ariana DeBose is the lone "West Side" nominee, up for female supporting actor with Caitriona Balfe ("Belfast"), Cate Blanchett ("Nightmare Alley"), Kirsten Dunst ("The Power of the Dog") and Ruth Negga ("Passing").
A SAG win is more crucial than ever for studios and stars hoping to better their chances on Oscar night. COVID-19 is continuing to postpone or cancel awards shows, luncheons and events, and SAG Awards are handed out two weeks before final voting begins for the March 27 Oscars ceremony.
Among the TV highlights, fan favorite "Ted Lasso" scored five nominations in the comedy categories, including best cast, male actor for Jason Sudeikis and Brett Goldstein, and female actor for Hannah Waddingham and Juno Temple.
HBO's hit "Succession" nabbed five nominations in the drama categories: best cast, best female actor for Sarah Snook, plus Brian Cox, Kieran Culkin and Jeremy Strong taking up most of the male actor contingent. Netflix's popular Korean show "Squid Game" fared well, too: In addition to being up for best drama ensemble, it took home actor nominations for Lee Jung-jae and Jung Ho-yeon.
