For the past 5 years, the world has watched Fiona grow from a hippo preemie to the thriving hippo she is today.But despite her growing exterior, Fiona's care team says her personality really hasn't changed and she is still the charming, sassy hippo she's been from the start."Fiona has one of the biggest personalities I've ever experienced human or animal," Senior keeper and one of Fiona's primary caretakers, Jenna Wingate said.Wingate said she hasn't noticed a huge change in Fiona's personality."She's definitely still very friendly and loves her mom and humans and seeks out attention and is always willing to train and look for the cameras," Wingate said.Fiona will find people who are visiting from out of town or those maybe not feeling well and pick them out from the crowd to entertain and cheer them up.Her sass is still unmatched, standing up to her mom and knowing what she wants.But one thing that will get her to stand back, bubbles."Fiona is afraid of bubbles," Wingate said.It's that silly and sassy personality that has captured hearts from around the world.Wingate said 5 years later, her story is still being shared."People are still coming and crying when they see her and doing all sort of things for an opportunity to get a photo with her," Wingate said. "People tell us how she's changed their lives or helped them get through hard times whether its their own illness or their child in the NICU because Fiona was in her own little hippo NICU people can really relate to her and her underdog stories and it helps them get through their days."Born six weeks premature at the Cincinnati Zoo on Jan. 24, 2017, Fiona weighed only 29 pounds at birth — 25 pounds less than the lowest recorded birth weight for her species. She survived because of her animal care team's tireless efforts to save her and has inspired many to care about her species and wildlife. From NICU baby to now, Fiona is still as sassy and bubbly as ever.
