Eight Cincinnati Public Schools will temporarily utilize remote learning amid the increased community spread of COVID-19.
Academy of World Languages in Evanston and LEAP Academy in North Fairmount began remote learning Thursday after the district cited staffing shortages related to the pandemic.
Then on Thursday, the district announced six more schools – Carson School and Rees E. Price Academy in East Price Hill, Gilbert A. Dater High School in Westwood, Hays-Porter School in the West End, Rothenberg Academy in Over-the-Rhine and Walnut Hills High School in Evanston– will join in remote learning beginning Friday.
The shift to remote learning is occurring in 1-of-8 schools in the 65-building, 36,000-student Cincinnati system.
Academy of World Languages and LEAP Academy will resume in-person classes next Tuesday, Jan. 11, while the six other schools beginning remote learning Friday will return on Jan. 12.
During remote learning, students will receive instruction via Google Meet, according to the district. Attendance will be taken. No after-school activities will take place during the remote-learning period.
On Monday, the school board was asked to vote to move all schools to remote instruction starting Thursday through Jan. 18. Board members debated and weighed the idea at length but could not reach a consensus.
District officials said they are making decisions to shift to remote learning on a school-by-school basis and communicating those decisions to families and staff as quickly as possible.
That may mean migrating classrooms, grades, or schools to remote learning, as needed.
School officials plan to provide an update on staffing, COVID-19 cases and school closures at the next board meeting at 6:30 p.m. Monday.
