Covington Catholic ranked 2nd in first AP poll; 3 girls teams ranked

Covington Catholic center Mitchell Rylee (5) collects a rebound against La Salle guard Roman Severt (4) in the first half at Covington Catholic High School Dec. 10, 2021.

Covington Catholic is ranked second in the first high school basketball poll of the season by the Kentucky Associated Press.

The Colonels are 12-2 as they return home to play 35th District foe Beechwood Friday night.

CovCath is coming off its first-ever championship in the prestigious King of the Bluegrass Tournament in Louisville. CovCath beat fourth-ranked North Laurel and fifth-ranked Male in that tournament. Then the Colonels went 3-1 in a tourney last week at the Villages complex in Florida, with the loss coming by three to a team from Orlando with multiple Division I prospects.

CovCath earned two first-place votes from the 12 AP voters and averaged third-place among the other 10 voters. George Rogers Clark (11-1), the reigning 10th Region champion, is No. 1 with nine first-place votes.
