Within hours of the news that Cincinnati City Manager Paula Boggs Muething would not stay on under Cincinnati Mayor-elect Aftab Pureval, Pureval announced he was nominating former city solicitor John Curp to take the job on an interim basis while a national search is conducted.
Curp, who must be approved by the new city council, would start Jan. 19, which is Boggs Muething's last day.
"John Curp is a smart, effective, and proven government executive,” Pureval said in a press release. “He has the leadership skills to bring innovation and collaboration to the city."
Pureval pointed to Curp's work in helping getting The Banks, Washington Park and Music Hall projects going.
"I’m excited for his leadership to help execute the bold vision that the incoming city council and I share,” Pureval said.
Curp is a partner at Blank Rome law firm serving clients on business, litigation, and environmental matters before local, state, and federal governments. Before joining Blank Rome, John served as city solicitor.
Curp is not a certified city manager.
When Mayor John Cranley was elected in 2013 he took decided to do a national search for a new city manager. The interim city manager back then moved Curp out of the solicitor job to the Metropolitan Sewer District at a third of Curp's solicitor salary.
Curp subsequently went to Blank Rome.
Curp is a graduate of Miami University and the Indiana University School of Law.
“It’s an honor to be appointed by mayor-elect Aftab and I’m eager to work with him and our elected City Council Members to align the administration’s strategic priorities with Council's legislative goals," Curp said in the release. "Cincinnati has both significant challenges and real promise ahead."
The choice is not a surprise. Pureval's transition advisor team includes former Mayor Mark Mallory, who has always had high praise for Curp, who worked in Mallory's administration.
