Milford girls basketball has a new name atop its list of all-time 3-point shooters.
In the Eagles’ 69-40 win over Fairfield on Tuesday, senior guard Madalyn Hills hit the 121st and 122nd 3-pointers of her career. That latter bucket broke the program’s record for career 3s made.
The record came as a surprise to Hills, who didn’t know she was about to make school history during the game.
“It was really great. I didn’t really know I had to get two in that game to get it,” Hills said. “... And it was really great that my best friend who’s also my teammate was the one who passed me the ball for the assist to get the record.”
Senior guard Paige Ayler got the assist on Hills’ record-breaking triple.
Milford junior varsity coach Kelly Noll was the previous record holder with 121 3s made. It’s not the first time Hills has broken one of Noll’s 3-point records. Last season, Hills broke Noll’s team record for 3-pointers in a single season, knocking down 53 triples and shooting 32% from beyond the arc.
“Last year, when I found out (Noll) had the single-season record, I didn’t know that at first, but then it was pretty cool getting to know her because she started when I started,” Hills said. “I got to know her and she got to help me get to that record even though I didn’t know about it, but she’s helped me so much to get to this point.”
With 11 games remaining in Milford’s regular season schedule, Hills has plenty of time left to add to her record this season.
Hills looks to be the 3-point specialist for Milford. Her 24 3-pointers are nine more than anyone else on the team, and all but six of her shot attempts have been from distance. She said a lot of her attempts come from spot-ups and 3s in transition, a role that requires a lot mentally.
“It’s hard mentally to be able to do that because when people miss shots, it sometimes will get in their heads,” Hills said. “It takes a lot for me to focus and not worry about what has happened in the past. I’ve just gotta focus on the next shot to be able to contribute to my team.”
Hills has currently made 24 treys and is shooting 30% from beyond the arc as Milford is 9-2 overall and 7-1 in Eastern Cincinnati Conference play.
The Eagles are second in the ECC standings behind Turpin, which is 10-1 overall and 7-1 in conference play.
