A bat and knife were recovered at the scene of the homicide where prosecutors say a man killed his 75-year-old grandmother.
Stephan A. Danbury, 21, is charged with murder in the death of Mary Danbury, his grandmother, according to the Clermont County Prosecutor's Office.
Milford police went were called to a Seminole Trail residence Wednesday morning to check on the welfare of Mary Danbury and found her dead on the floor there, officers reported.
Enquirer Media Partner Fox 19 spoke with Mary's son, Eugene Danbury, who said he is devastated by his mother’s sudden death.
“She was just one of the best people I know with one of the biggest hearts,” he said.
Eugene said he helped raise two of Mary’s grandchildren, who are Eugene’s nephews. Stephen was one of them.
Eugene says Stephen had a history of mental health issues. This past summer, he says Stephen had an episode in his apartment and was evicted because of it.
Mary, according to Eugene, took Stephen in when he had nowhere else to go.
“He was known to have violent outbursts and be unstable and a potential danger to himself and others,” Eugene said. “Unfortunately, there was just no assistance we could get for him, and undoubtedly it ended up costing her her life.”
Eugene said a celebration of life for his mother Mary will be taking place in the coming weeks.
“‘Until her last day on earth, she was a servant to God and a servant to others to make sure they had what they needed,” Eugene said. “Even at her own sacrifice, she would make sure if she could help, she would help.”
Danbury is being held at the Clermont County Jail on a $2 million bond. His next hearing is scheduled for Jan. 3.
Mary Danbury worked at the Milford Kroger for the past 18 years and was a positive presence in the community, the grocery company said in a statement.
"Mary was well-liked by her peers and associates and our thoughts and prayers are with her family and friends during this difficult time," the statement said.
