Former Cincinnati Reds manager Bryan Price was hired by the San Diego Padres as a senior advisor to the Major League coaching staff, per a team announcement Monday.
Price "will work alongside the Major League coaching staff throughout Spring Training and the 2022 season, serving as a both an on-field instructor and a mentor within the clubhouse," per a press release from the team.
Price announced in Oct. 2020 that he was retiring as the Philadelphia Phillies' pitching coach to spend time with his family, a decision Phils manager Joe Girardi said "shocked" the team. Price had two years remaining on his contract at the time of his retirement.
Just before the Phillies hired him, Price reportedly turned down an opportunity to become the Arizona Diamondbacks' pitching coach.
Price managed the Reds to a record of 279-387 from 2014 until the team dismissed him and made Jim Riggleman the interim manager 18 games into the 2018 season.
Price was the Diamondbacks' pitching coach from 2007 to 2009 before becoming the Reds' pitching coach from 2010 to 2013. He was the Seattle Mariners' pitching coach from 2000 to 2006.
