Outside of the lopsided loss at crosstown rival Xavier and a stumble at home against Monmouth, the University of Cincinnati men's basketball team has looked rather impressive in first-year head coach Wes Miller's debut season.
But despite the team's growth both on and off the court, there's one nagging problem with this group that Miller and his staff can't seem to solve.

"I'm really frustrated with our defensive rebounding," Miller said. "I mean, I have thought about defensive rebounding and the way we're coaching it and the way we're drilling it and the way we're showing film and the way we're emphasizing it. I've thought about it in ways I never thought I would have to think about it before. It is an Achilles' heel of our team at the moment. We have the talent and the ability to correct it and we have the willingness within our locker room. We have great, great guys, and they want to do it right. We've got to get it corrected."
A team that is dominant on the defensive glass is a team that is able to get out in transition or just simply have more offensive possessions than the opponent.
Miller said this Cincinnati team doesn't have a pair of "NBA defensive rebounders" so it will need to address the issue collectively. Miller said that means the guards will have to take on more of the rebounding responsibility.
"We're working at it every day," he said.
The Bearcats (8-3) have two more games to figure it out before they open American Athletic Conference play Dec. 28 at No. 14 Houston. The first of the two home games is Saturday afternoon against HBCU Texas Southern.

PLAYERS TO WATCH
Brison Gresham
If the name Brison Gresham sounds familiar to Cincinnati fans, it's because the 6-foot-9, 240-pound forward played three seasons at AAC foe Houston before transferring to Texas Southern. Gresham led the Cougars and finished third in the AAC with 1.5 blocks per game last season. If Miller wants to see better rebounding from the Bearcats, they'll need to keep Gresham off the glass. The New Orleans native leads the Tigers in rebounding, averaging nearly nine boards per game. Gresham had a game-high 13 rebounds in Texas Southern's 69-54 win Dec. 6 at Florida.
A.J. McGinnis
The 6-foot-3 UNC Greensboro transfer scored a season-high seven points on 3-of-7 shooting in 12 minutes off the bench for the Bearcats on Tuesday against Florida A&M. They were McGinnis' first points since the Alabama A&M game on Nov. 16. With fellow reserve guard Mason Madsen likely to miss his second straight game with a hip injury, McGinnis' role could increase against Texas Southern as he continues to work his way back from a high ankle sprain.
KEY TO THE GAME
Jeremiah Davenport's offense
Davenport isn't just the key to Saturday's game, he's the key to Cincinnati's season. The preseason second-team All-AAC selection scored a team-high 16 points (14 in the second half) in UC's 27-point victory over Florida A&M on Tuesday. It was the eighth time this season that Davenport scored in double figures. The Bearcats are 7-1 in those games.
"We know we need Jeremiah to be a great offensive player for our team to be successful offensively," Miller said. "As coaches, we've got to keep trying to do our job to put him in position."
The former Moeller High School standout needs to get into a rhythm before Cincinnati opens AAC play.
