President Joe Biden surveys Kentucky tornado damage

President Joe Biden has landed in Kentucky on Wednesday to view damage from last weekend's tornadoes that left behind death and destruction in several communities.

Biden first announced his plans to travel to Kentucky during a briefing Monday alongside Homeland Security. He was updated on the federal storm response for those impacted in the western half of the state.

U.S. Congressman James Comer is accompanying Biden on Air Force One and his tour of Kentucky. Comer represents the state's First District which includes much of the devastated areas.

He began boarding Air Force One around 9:30 a.m. and arrived at Fort Campbell just before 11 a.m. He was greeted by Gov. Andy Beshear, First Lady Britainy Beshear and former Gov. Steve Beshear.

Biden then made his way to Mayfield, and got a briefing from officials.

"I was asked 'What is the most impressive thing you've seen?' I started off thinking in damage. Then, I said 'The way you all come together,'” Biden told leaders.

He also expressed how the state will continue to get support from the federal government.

"Don't hesitate to ask for anything. If we can't do it, we'll tell you we can't, and we'll tell you from experience how you can maybe get it done…if you can’t get it done through the federal way," he told leaders.

After Mayfield, Biden will tour storm damage in Dawson Springs.

Over the weekend, Biden signed a federal emergency disaster declaration for multiple counties.

According to a news release from the White House, this action authorizes the Department of Homeland Security and Federal Emergency Management Agency to coordinate all disaster relief efforts which have the purpose of alleviating the hardship and suffering caused by the emergency on the local population.
