Congressional leaders Tuesday evening met on the steps of the U.S. Capitol to honor the nearly 800,000 U.S. lives stolen by the COVID-19 pandemic.
A bipartisan group of congressional leaders, including House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer and House Republican Leader Kevin McCarthy, led a moment of silence. Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell was not present due to a scheduling conflict.
Lawmakers of both parties held red candles on the steps of the U.S. Capitol as the sun set over the marble dome. A line of the red candles sat in front of the Capitol as lawmakers gathered with an U.S. Air Force sergeant singing, "Shall We Gather at the River" and "God Bless America."
As of the time of the event, 799,789 people had been killed in the U.S. due to COVID-19, according to data from John Hopkins University.
