Jones’ family confirms UC Athletics Hall of Famer has died at 51

Former UC forward Herb Jones led the Bearcats in scoring and rebounding during their 1991-92 Final Four season under Bob Huggins.

Former Cincinnati Bearcats standout Herb Jones, who joined the UC Athletics Hall of Fame earlier this year, died at the age of 51, a family member confirmed.

Jones scored 1,097 points with 475 rebounds between 1990 and 1992 to become the only player in school history to score at least 1,000 points in just two seasons.

West Virginia Mountaineers assistant coach Erik Martin, who played for Bob Huggins and now coaches alongside him, asked for prayers via Twitter last week for his former teammate.

"RIP #34," Martin tweeted early Monday morning.

Jones led the Bearcats' 1992 Final Four team with 18.1 points and 7.1 rebounds per game.

Martin sat out as a transfer during Jones' first season at UC, and played with Jones during the 1991-92 season. He's served on head coach Bob Huggins' WVU coaching staff since 2007.
