Woodward’s Paul McMillan IV crossed the 2,000-career-points mark in historic fashion Saturday against Indianapolis Warren Central.
At the BodyArmor Classic in Charleston, Indiana, McMillan scored 41 points, five rebounds, three assists and two steals to lead Woodward to a 2-0 start on the season. It was McMillan’s second 40-point performance of his career and the 10th in Woodward history.
It was a free throw at the 6:09 mark of the fourth quarter to secure the 2,000th point and give the Bulldogs a 67-54 lead at the time. After limited scoring in the first half, McMillan erupted for 19 points in the third quarter and 15 in the fourth, as his aggressiveness earned him a lot of trips to the free-throw line.
McMillan shot 22 of 27 from the charity stripe. His 22 made free throws put him on the Ohio High School Athletic Association’s list of most free throws made in a game (minimum 22). He’s now tied for the 19th-most free throws in a game and is the ninth player to make 22 free throws in a game in OHSAA history.
McMillan now has 2,009 career points and is averaging 32 points per game through two games this season, as he dropped 23 points and six assists in Woodward’s season opener, an 88-81 win against Columbus Beechcroft. He needs 191 points to become the 25th name on OHSAA’s career scoring leaders list (2,200 points minimum). Entering the game, McMillan needed 32 points to hit the 2,000-point mark. He scored 34 in the second half alone.
