Xavier’s Zach Freemantle medically cleared to play

Xavier Musketeers forward Zach Freemantle (32) dunks with under a minute to play in the second half of the men's NCAA basketball game on Saturday, Feb. 27, 2021, at the Cintas Center in Cincinnati. Xavier Musketeers defeated Creighton Bluejays 77-69.

Xavier junior forward Zach Freemantle was medically cleared to return to all basketball activities on Friday, head coach Travis Steele told The Enquirer following his team's 59-58 win over Virginia Tech in the NIT Season Tip-Off.

Freemantle, a preseason first-team All-Big East selection who led Xavier in scoring and rebounding last season, has been out since early August with a foot injury that required surgery roughly five weeks ago.

Steele had been pointing to Dec. 1 as a possible return date, but it appears Freemantle is ahead of schedule. Steele emphasized that Freemantle's return will be gradual. He's not going to play 30 minutes a game right out of the gate. They'll slowly ease him back into the mix.

For the first time this season, Freemantle was in uniform and a full participant in warmups before the Musketeers took down Virginia Tech to improve to 5-1 on the season.
