Roy Lucas Jr. has returned to being a head coach in Northern Kentucky football after replacing the man who replaced him.

Simon Kenton High School has hired Lucas as its new head football coach.

Lucas brings more than 30 years of coaching experience and most recently has served as an assistant coach and offensive coordinator at Simon Kenton High School since 2012.

He was head coach at Simon Kenton from 1997-99, then moved over to Lloyd Memorial High School in 2000, where he remained until 2010.

He replaces Jeff Marksberry, who was Lucas’s assistant during those years and replaced him in 2000. Marksberry has been there for the past 22 seasons.

While at Lloyd Memorial, Lucas led his 2003 Juggernaut team to a record of 9-5 where they eventually fell in the Class 2A state semifinals. Lucas has been a vital part of the success of the Simon Kenton Football program for the last nine years.

In addition to his coaching experience, Roy is an accomplished leader and educator. Lucas has served many roles including classroom teacher and guidance counselor.

“Roy brings a wealth of football knowledge and experience to our football program. Coach Lucas’ passion for the game and Simon Kenton High School is contagious. Our student-athletes are fortunate to have him as the head coach,” principal Craig Reinhart said.

Lucas’s uncle is basketball legend Jerry Lucas. His father Roy Lucas Sr. was a head football coach for more than 25 years, including at Lloyd, and died in 2019.

Marksberry has been the head football coach and athletic director for those 22 years. He has a career record of 158-103, leading the Pioneers to an unprecedented level of success.

The Pioneers reached the Class 6A state championship game in 2008, losing to perennial powerhouse Louisville Trinity in the finals, 48-0.

That started a run of excellence in which the Pioneers reached the regional final in 11 of 12 seasons between 2011-19. Simon Kenton went 10-0 in the regular season in 2013 and 2015 and won at least 10 games 10 different times under Marksberry. SK reached the state semis in 2015 after going 13-0 to get there.
