As the doors opened at Elder High School’s Schaeper Center, the line stretched around the building. After a year of smaller events, this return of the St. Vincent de Paul coat distribution warmed hearts by sharing a warm coat with our neighbors in need.Kristen Gallagher of St. Vincent DePaul was glad to welcome the families anxious to shop for a warm coat to hold off the winter cold.“That’s what we are all about. We are all about that personal connection. This is one day we were able to help out hundreds of people like we do everyday, not just in these distribution events." In three distributions across the region, St. Vincent DePaul will provide coats for about 4,000 people. Each donation and interaction is a heartwarming gift, neighbor to neighbor. The Lemasters family have been long donors to this coat drive. “We're honored to help, but more, we are humbled and grateful for getting through a challenging year. The generosity that people have shown us, that allowed us to move this forward," Poul Lemasters said.“We have about 25 people that help us do this throughout the year, to raise the money to buy coats to be able to sort them, to deliver them. It's beyond us."Brian Hodgeman and his son Corey volunteered to shop and sort and do whatever needed to be done. “We’ve seen a lot of people come through these doors. It's great to see the kids at Elder helping out alongside parents like me.”From one neighbor to another, personal shoppers connecting and finding the perfect coat— sharing the warmth of the season and the Tri-state and the message of caring for one another.
