A teenager is behind bars after trying to rob a church in Kentucky."I was completely surprised, and I had no clue or idea what was going on," said John Brown, who owns the Kentucky Convenient Store.Brown said he couldn't believe his eyes. The Portland Church of Christ in Louisville, Kentucky, was the scene of a crime and what was more shocking to him was the alleged suspect was a teenager."It's just one thing after another right now, in Louisville and all across the United States, the youth are in trouble," Brown said.Detectives said the teenage boy entered the church during Sunday morning service. After money was collected during the offering, he grabbed the collection plate and ran down the side aisle with a pistol. He tried to fire the weapon but was tackled by several parishioners.Police said as he was being disarmed, he bit several of them.Brown says while he doesn't know this teenager, he knows many other young people in this neighborhood who stop by his store for a snack or soda."We treat everybody with respect around here. Kids, adults, children; It really doesn't make a difference," Brown said.He says his calling is helping the younger generation. His reasoning is simple — he lost several of his own family members to gun violence."I feel like I'm responsible for trying to make a difference because the cousins that I lost were like sons and I feel like I failed them. I failed them because they're not here," Brown said. Brown hopes when people in the area hear about what happened, they channel any emotion they feel into helping guide the next generation."The children are our future and if we don't present positive role models and look out for the kids and show them something different, we might as well expect what we're getting," he said.Watch the full story in the video above.
