Renee Berlon of St. Vincent de Paul has seen much of the need across our region.“There are so many in our community that do not have a coat, especially those kiddos that grow so fast from season to season so we are grateful to be able to collect coats for our neighbors today.”The annual St. Vincent de Paul coat drive kicked off on a day winter ripped through the tri-state. Donors pulled up to the doors of New Riff, opening their hearts to share the gift of warmth with their neighbors in need. And the folks at New Riff shared the warmth. Amy Tobin of New Riff Distilling said the distillery is glad to serve.“When we learned that St. Vincent DePaul was collecting 4,000 coats for our neighbors in need, we thought we need to roll up our sleeves and get in on it,” Tobin said. The distiller opened its Newport lot as a collection location and poured on the warmth of good cheer. “Every specially marked bottle of our Rye we will give one dollar to St. Vincent de Paul for every bottle sold. And that just feels great, our customers definitely want to help as much as we do." The familiar St. Vincent de Paul blue barrels are appearing at retailers and restaurants across the tri-state. Coat drive organizers say you can drop off a new or gently used coat that will go to a neighbor in need.Amy Smith of St. Vincent de Paul said the coat distributions begin next week and continue through the New Year.“A warm coat for their kid, a warm coat for them, a warm coat for someone that might be homeless or may not have heat, it gives that little bit of security to know that somebody from the community cares.”
