The Cincinnati Reds are willing to engage in trade talks involving right-handed starting pitcher Luis Castillo, according to a report Monday via Twitter from MLB Network's Jon Morosi.
Morosi added that Castillo, who has pitched all five of his Major League Baseball seasons for the Reds, already is drawing interest from multiple MLB teams.
Castillo turns 29 next month. He could become a free agent after the 2023 season. His 2021 salary was $4.2 million. He's projected to make about $7.5M in his second year of arbitration.
In 2021, Castillo led the league in losses with 16, walks with 75 and games started with 33. He posted a 3.98 ERA for the season, but he had three outstanding months: June (1.71 ERA with one home run allowed in 31 2/3 innings), July (2.15 ERA with three home runs allowed in 37 2/3 innings), and September, which included one October start (2.35 ERA with two home runs allowed in 30 2/3 innings).
Castillo also was better at home this past season than on the road, posting a 3.18 ERA with just six homers allowed in 99 innings pitched at Great American Ball Park.
Castillo, an All-Star in 2019, has made at least 30 starts per season for the Reds in three of the past four seasons - with the exception being the pandemic-shortened 2020 season. In 123 career appearances - all starts - he's posted a 40-49 record, 3.72 ERA and 1.220 WHIP, with 85 homers allowed in 707 1/3 innings.
The Reds acquired Castillo, Zeek White and Austin Brice from the Miami Marlins for pitcher Dan Straily in Jan. 2017.
Last week, the Reds declined starting pitcher Wade Miley's club option, and the Chicago Cubs claimed him on waivers.
