
MADEIRA - Since leaving Madeira High School in 2013, Andrew Benintendi has had numerous baseball highlights.
In addition to four national Player of the Year awards in college baseball and a World Series with the Boston Red Sox, you can now add Rawlings Gold Glove winner.
Sunday night it was announced the Kansas City Royals left fielder was among the major leaguers honored for their fielding.
In his first season with the Royals following five with the Red Sox, Benintendi earns his first Gold Glove Award. He finished tied with runners-up Randy Arozarena and Lourdes Gurriel Jr. with seven defensive runs saved, but spent significantly more time at the position in 2021 -- he played 1,116 innings in left field, while Arozarena played 612 1/3, and Gurriel played 943 2/3.
Joining Benintendi as a Gold Glover was teammate and center fielder Michael A.Taylor. The 27-year-old Benintendi had a fielding percentage of .987 with just three errors and a career-high 234 putouts in 129 games.
At the plate, he hit .276 with 17 homers and 73 runs batted in. It was his first season with the Royals after spending 2016-2020 with Boston where he part of the 2018 World Series champions.
Benintendi was a former Division III baseball and basketball Player of the Year at Madeira and the Gatorade Ohio Player of the Year after his senior season. He played baseball for Jack Kuzniczci and basketball for Jim Reynolds while a Mustang.
In his second year at Arkansas, he won the Golden Spikes Award, Dick Howser Trophy, Baseball America and National Collegiate Baseball Player of the Year honors after his sophomore season.
He was the seventh overall selection in the 2015 MLB Draft by the Red Sox and quickly became a fan favorite. After an injury-plagued 2020, he was traded to the Royals for the 2021 season.
Former Red Adam Duvall was a National League winner in right field for his work with the Marlins and world champion Braves.
