Jonathan India embraces bigger role with Reds

CARLSBAD, Calif. – Following a week when the Cincinnati Reds traded two veteran players and saw another opt out of his contract, Jonathan India was named one of the three finalists for National League Rookie of the Year on Monday.

It was a reminder of who the Reds plan to build their team around in upcoming years. As the Reds shed players to, General Manager Nick Krall said multiple times, “align payroll with our resources,” India proved he was one of the rising young players in the league.

India is vying to become the Reds’ first Rookie of the Year winner since Scott Williamson in 1999. The organization hasn’t had a position player win the award since Chris Sabo in 1988. The winner will be announced on Nov. 15 with Miami’s Trevor Rogers and St. Louis’ Dylan Carlson as the other finalists.

“All the older guys really, really helped me this year,” India said. “I can't thank them enough. Since Opening Day, they treated me like I was a veteran. They didn't treat me like a rookie. That's why I think I was so comfortable out there every day and competing at their level.”

Cincinnati Reds second baseman Jonathan India (6) pumps his fist as he rounds the bases after hitting a two-run home run in the fifth inning against the Detroit Tigers, Friday, Sept. 3, 2021, at Great American Ball Park in Cincinnati.

India isn’t surprised he found himself in position to win Rookie of the Year. It was the one personal goal he set for himself when he began the season. He had already forced his way into the Reds lineup with a breakout spring training performance.

Turning 25 in December, India hit .269 with 34 doubles, 21 homers, 69 RBI, 98 runs and 12 stolen bases. He had a .376 on-base percentage, boosted by a league-high 23 hit by pitches.
