A near sweep clears the way for a new era for city council

Perhaps the biggest surprise of election night this year in Cincinnati was near-sweep of city council seats by the endorsed slate of Democrats.

Election Day 2021 has come and gone, bringing with it a new Cincinnati mayor and city council. Aftab Pureval, the Hamilton County Clerk of Courts, soundly defeated longtime Cincinnati City Hall fixture David Mann.

But perhaps the biggest surprise of the night was near-sweep of city council seats by the endorsed slate of Democrats.

Eight of the nine endorsed Democrats will now be on council. Of the 27 other candidates, a mix between independent Democrats, Republicans, and candidates endorsed by the Charter Committee, only Republican Liz Keating made the cut, retaining her current council seat.

The eight Democrats have signaled they'll work well together, and that they'll be supportive of Pureval. And Keating has so far been willing to be a bipartisan voice on council.

Is the era of infighting between the mayor and council over? Can a mostly unified city hall move Cincinnati forward in these difficult times? Is the corruption that plagued council in 2020 at an end?

We'll find out soon enough.
