Authorities have launched an investigation after what appears to be a sewing needle was found in trick-or-treat candy. Fostoria Police report that the needle was found lodged in a KitKat bar on Sunday night. The child was uninjured, officials said, adding that the child who reported the needle was trick-or-treating in the area of North Union, Summit and Rock Streets in Fostoria.A similar object was found in at least one other candy bar, police report. “Although we only are aware of two pieces of candy being involved, we take this seriously and are appalled that anyone would be so demented as to want to hurt children in our community, ” Fostoria Chief of Police Keith Loreno said. Following the discovery, ProMedica Fostoria Community Hospital has volunteered to help, offering to provide X-rays of candy distributed in the area. On Monday, parents can take candy received on Halloween to the hospital between 9 a.m. and 11 a.m., and again from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m."Please go to the main entrance but do not enter the hospital. The staff will have a portable X-Ray machine available to scan the candy. Due to Covid restrictions, please follow all necessary safety restrictions on the hospital grounds and follow the instructions of the staff upon arrival," a statement from the police department said. Anyone who has information on the tampered candy is asked to call the police at 419-435-8573.
