Mercy Health and local officials are scheduled to break ground Friday near the Kings Island amusement park for a 60-bed hospital in another sign that the novel coronavirus pandemic did not slow medical construction across the Cincinnati region.
Here are five things to know about the new facility:
What will it be called?
Mercy Health-Cincinnati unveiled plans for the $200 million hospital in January. This week, hospital system spokeswoman Nanette Bentley said the name for the new institution will be unveiled at Friday’s groundbreaking.
The hospital will go up at the southeast corner of Kings Island Drive and Kings Mills Road. It’s about a mile north of the Kings Island amusement park. It’s set to open in late 2023. The project architect is GBBN, and the construction firm is Danis.
How big will it be?
At 172,500 square feet, the hospital will have 60 beds with another 15 beds in the emergency department. It will have a catheterization laboratory with interventional radiology, four rooms for surgery, two for endoscopy and two for cystoscopy. A Mercy Health statement said the hospital will employ 175 to 200 workers to start and grow to more than 275. The project includes a next-door medical office building.
Why was the location picked?
The southeast corner of Warren County, right off the Interstate 71 interchange, doesn’t have a hospital. TriHealth’s Bethesda North Hospital is 10 miles south, its Bethesda Arrow Hospital 5 miles north. UC Health’s West Chester Hospital is 8 miles west. Dave Fikse, Mercy Health-Cincinnati, noted that gap in the January announcement of the hospital.
“Our leadership team identified an opportunity for serving unmet inpatient needs in Warren County, while developing a strong partnership with the city of Mason,” he said. “This investment aligns with our mission to promote accessible, community health and well-being.”
Mason has about 33,000 residents. Warren County has about 235,000 residents.
What else is Mercy building?
Like other hospitals in the region, Mercy is on a building boom. Just this year in Warren County, Mercy put in an urgent care office in Maineville and primary care practices in Kings Mills and Maineville.
In January, Mason City Council approved for the Mercy Health hospital construction an economic participation agreement and incentive package with a $600,000 forgivable loan and waiver of expedited permit fees. The hospital system and the city also agreed to collaborate on ways to stimulate biomedical research.
Other projects across the region
Last month, Cincinnati Children’s Hospital Medical Center cut the ribbon on its $600 million patient tower in Corryville, which is scheduled to begin receiving patients this month.
It was the largest construction project in the Cincinnati region since Paul Brown Stadium in 2000.
UC Health also broke ground last month on a $221 million renovation of the University of Cincinnati Medical Center's emergency department, which will double in size.
