Airbnb is cracking down on unauthorized parties again this year by putting in new restrictions for this upcoming Halloween.The company banned all parties and events at Airbnb listings in August of 2020.Ahead of Halloween weekend, the company said it is doubling down on those efforts. Changes include blocking guests who do not have a history of positive reviews from booking one-night reservations of entire homes.The company will also restrict certain local and last-minute bookings by guests without a history of positive reviews on Airbnb and also block reservations within an expanded radius.Guests who have a history of positive reviews on Airbnb will not be restricted, the company said.Ryan Messer owns three Airbnb's in the city. He was one of the owners who unfortunately had to deal with a large party and damage to the property.Early in the pandemic, he said a woman rented one of his homes claiming it was for her and her son."She had actually rented it for her cousin who proceeded to throw an all-night party and then live stream which just about the most unimaginable activities," Messer said. "People were obviously having a rager kind of party." He said they left a mess behind including liquor bottles, dirty diapers, damage to appliances and holes in the walls. Messer said the group also displayed weapons, stole half the furniture in the home and had the police called on them.Fortunately, the stricter rules he has enforced since last year have worked in his favor."We haven't had a single problem since," he said.For Halloween weekend, guests making one or two-night reservations will need to confirm that they understand Airbnb’s party ban and that they may be subject to legal action if that rule is broken. Airbnb said that when they enforced the restrictions last year, they saw unauthorized parties drop by over 49 percent for Halloween in the U.S. and Canada.Specifically in Ohio, more than 600 people were deterred by the restrictions, with the majority coming out of Cleveland, Cincinnati and Columbus.
