Miami University is just one of several schools in our area mandating the COVID-19 vaccine. Oct. 25 is the deadline for its students, teachers and staff to get their first shot; full vaccination is due by Nov. 22. At the start of the school year in late August, more than 75% of the on-campus population was already vaccinated. School officials say with Monday's deadline, they hope to have new vaccine numbers later this week. Current reports show COVID-19 rates remain low on campus. In regards to the mandate, the University’s president, Gregory Crawford, said, “All of us would like to return to pre-pandemic conditions where we can all be together, collaborating in our vibrant learning community focused on mission and purpose,” adding “vaccination is a necessary tool to move us toward that goal.” Students have differing opinions when it comes to the vaccination mandate.“I know that's kind of a controversial opinion, especially on this campus, but I don't think it's really a free-will thing at this point if you're going to be endangering other people's lives and health,” said sophomore Molly Guiberson. Those who do not wish to get the vaccine have the option to file a medical or non-medical exemption. Freshman Lielyn Mercer says she is not yet comfortable with getting vaccinated.“I don't really feel like there's been enough research. I took the religious exemption route, because I feel like a big part of it does go against my beliefs,” Mercer said.If students do not meet Miami University’s COVID-19 vaccine or exemption requirement, provisional holds will be placed on accounts. Students can register for courses while the provisional hold is in effect until Nov. 12. After Nov. 12, students will not be able to register for spring classes or change their spring class schedules unless they have met the COVID-19 vaccination requirement. They may also be subject to cancellation of their spring class schedule.
