A mural dedicated to former Cincinnati Reds player Joe Morgan will be unveiled Saturday, honoring the legacy of the second baseman.
The mural will be painted on the side of the P&G MLB Cincinnati Reds Youth Academy in Roselawn, and the dedication will be from 10 to 10:30 a.m. Saturday.
The event will include a number of attendees, including: Reds President and COO Phil Castellini; Reds Hall of Famer George Foster; Morgan's daughter, Lisa Morgan; PNC Bank regional president of Greater Cincinnati & Northern Kentucky Kay Geiger; and players and coaches from the Reds RBI program and the "Joe Morgan Association" baseball and softball teams.
The mural was started in August and was completed in September. Painter Brent Billingsley and a team of five artists led over 30 volunteers to help paint the mural, including children from the Roselawn neighborhood.
Other volunteers were from Back2Back Ministries, Cincinnati Children's Hospital and HYPE Ministries.
Morgan died at age 77 in October 2020 at his home in Danville, California, from a nerve condition, a non-specified polyneuropathy, according to a statement given from his family.
He was a 10-time All-Star and two-time World Series champion with the Big Red Machine.
Morgan played eight seasons with the Cincinnati Reds (1972-79), and was selected to the All-Star team each year. He was named the National League Most Valuable Player in 1975 and ’76, and he earned five Gold Gloves for his exceptional defense at second base.
He was the first of the "Great Eight" from the Big Red Machine to die.
