FAIRFIELD – City Barbecue is poised to open its first Ohio eatery with the company’s new design next year in Fairfield.
The Columbus-based eatery wants to build a 3,500 square-foot restaurant on the site of the now-closed Gold Star Chili on Ohio 4.
“This is a brand new concept put together over the last year,’’ said Keith Willis, chief development officer for City Barbecue.
“We custom-designed it to fit the site in Fairfield,” Willis said. “We’ve only built one other like it, in Raleigh, North Carolina.”
Willis said the Gold Star Chili building would be razed and a new restaurant built on the 1.4-acre site on the southeast corner of Ohio 4 and Seward Road.
Plans call for the restaurant to have both indoor and outdoor dining areas and a drive-through. Willis said there would also be a catering component and the full menu would be available as takeout or drive-through.
Among the offerings are hickory-smoked ribs, brisket, chicken, sausage, turkey breast and sides including baked beans, collards, vinegar slaw, and desserts.
The Fairfield location would be the seventh in the TriState. There are City Barbecue restaurants in Blue Ash, Hamilton, West Chester, Eastgate, Florence, and Highland Heights.
“We’re excited about being in the City of Fairfield and becoming a part of the fabric of the community,” Willis said.
Before construction can begin it will need approval from the city. The first public hearing will be held at 7 p.m., Oct. 12 in council chambers 5350 Pleasant Ave.
With city approval, Willis said the new restaurant could be open as early as April or May of next year.
“We’d like to be open next spring. The biggest barbecue season is between Memorial Day and Labor Day,” Willis said.
