ESPN college football analyst Kirk Herbstreit assessed the University of Cincinnati Bearcats' College Football Playoff chances during a conversation early Sunday with Scott Van Pelt on "SportsCenter," explaining that UC has the potential to make CFP history if it continues to take care of business this season.
"The most important thing to remember about what a Group of Five team needs to do is they need to not only take care of business in their conference," Herbstreit said. "They need kind of a perfect storm. ... They need some credibility from the year before. Check. They need a non-conference schedule that gets everybody's attention. You say whatever you want about Indiana? That's a Big 10 school - on the road in Bloomington - that was supposed to be a Top 15 team. They beat 'em. Wasn't pretty. They beat 'em. And then they went to South Bend, Indiana! Say whatever you want - Notre Dame's gonna win 10 games this year. And they went there and dominated that game. So they have done what they need to do. Now what do they do in conference? If they're undefeated at the end of the year, they will have a strong argument. Now, you have Alabama. You have Georgia. The Big 10, the Big 12, the Pac 12. It's gonna be a fine line between getting (the Bearcats) in and not. But they've done everything they need to do at this point. Now they've gotta run the table. It is what it is for the Group of Five.
"If Cincinnati runs the table - because of what they did last year, that's the thing that people don't understand - it's the sweat equity that you put in the year before and the year before that. But to be invited to the party? I'm not saying the rules are fair. I'm just saying you have to build that resume. And they have done that. So now they should reap the rewards of that effort. So the doors are opening for Cincinnati. ... Now they've just gotta keep winning games. And if they're undefeated at the end of the year, I'm telling you: We may finally have a Group of Five team in the party, in the top four."
"It means a lot to our guys - I know it does," Bearcats head coach Luke Fickell said after UC's win at Notre Dame, per The Enquirer's Keith Jenkins. "To us as coaches, (Saturday's win) means that we're 4-0 and we've got a chance to go 5-0."
