Wednesday's riot at the U.S. Capitol was easily the news story of the week. Well, the year, too. There were several strong comments and accounts of the unprecedented attack on the Capitol. Here are five stories involving people with Greater Cincinnati ties:'My Spidey senses were going off'Republican congressman Thomas Massie, who represents Northern Kentucky, recounted how he barricaded his doors with office furniture and grabbed his gun after watching President Trump speak to the crowd gathering outside the Capitol. "My Spidey senses were going off," Massie told The Enquirer on Thursday. "I knew something was going to happen."'It just got wild real quick'Chad and Kirsten Wagner of Covington, Kentucky, talked about his trip to Washington, D.C., to peacefully protest and support Trump. But from the steps of the Capitol, Chad felt a concussion grenade go off and saw the mist from tear gas. Then “all hell broke loose," he said. "It just got wild real quick. I felt it in my core. It shook me.”'Very disheartening'Mason City Councilman T.J. Honerlaw talked to The Enquirer before heading to Washington, D.C., to protest Congress certifying President-elect Joe Biden's election victory. "I don't know what's going to come out of this," Honerlaw said. He would not talk to The Enquirer on Thursday after the incident Wednesday. But he told Enquirer partner FOX19: “Some of my friends were actually on the steps of the Capitol, but we did not hear anything that happened. Very disheartening, because it was such a great event.”'Let's take it. Let's take the Capitol'Amy Harris, a freelance photojournalist from Dearborn County, Indiana, was on the scene to take photographs. She witnessed and captured Trump supporters clashing with police, scaling a concrete wall and taking the Capitol's exterior. "These three guys, they started riling up the crowd," she said. "They're like 'Let's take it. Let's take the Capitol.' "'The GOP must awaken'Former Rep. John Boehner, a West Chester Republican, wasn't in D.C., but watched as rioters ransacked the office of House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, who occupies the office Boehner once held. Boehner tweeted Thursday to congratulate Biden on his election as president and with a message for the Republican Party. "I once said the party of Lincoln and Reagan is off taking a nap. The nap has become a nightmare for our nation. The GOP must awaken. The invasion of our Capitol by a mob, incited by lies from some entrusted with power, is a disgrace to all who sacrificed to build our Republic." Source link
