Some hospital staff are quitting because they are exhausted, and others are leaving for higher-paying jobs as travel nurses. As COVID-19 cases rise across the country, there is a growing need for health care professionals who can go to areas in need of the most help.According to Vivian Health, before the pandemic average pay was anywhere from $1,000 to $2,000 a week it has now soared to rates as high as $9,000 a week. Hospitals are fighting to retain regular staffing, as tens of thousands of travel nursing jobs are available across the country. Florida, Texas and California are states with the most need for temporary health care workers. Travel nurses take on stints at hospitals filling high-demand positions, assisting regular staffing with the increase of patients due to COVID-19. Andrew Beiersdorfer said he left his job as an intensive care unit nurse at UC Health to pursue travel nursing in Fort Worth, Texas. “The travel nursing, I will make in one month, what I made in five to six months at UC. Down in Texas, I expect it to be a lot worse, which is part of the reason I'm going down there. That's one of the nice things about being a travel nurse, you get to go where you're needed and be a resource for that community,” Beiersdorfer said. Hospitals, especially those in high spread areas, are competing to get and retain workers using COVID-19 funding to provide incentives and increase salaries.
