Gov. Beshear confirms first cases of omicron variant in Kentucky


Kentucky Gov. Andy Beshear confirmed Saturday that the COVID-19 omicron variant has been detected in several Kentucky counties.

Beshear held a news conference Saturday afternoonn with Kentucky's public health commissioner Steven Stack to provide updates. 

According to information released following the conference, the Gravity Diagnostics Laboratory reported several positive omicron tests to the Kentucky Department for Public Health on Friday. The positive results were from patients in Kenton, Campbell and Fayette counties.

The omicron variant was also detected in Jefferson County by wastewater testing done by the University of Louisville and the Louisville Metro Department of Public Health and wellness, read the release.

Beshear had first confirmed that omicron was detected in Kentucky in a tweet Friday evening.
