Union members said previous contracts allowed their employers to force them to work excessive hours and deny them reasonable rest with meal breaks and sufficient time off between shifts. Leaders said the lowest paid crafts were receiving unlivable wages and streaming outlets including Netflix, Apple and Amazon were allowed to work them even harder for less money.
Many in Hollywood celebrated the news of the deal.
But not everyone was happy with the terms of the agreement. IATSE's social media mentions were flooded with frustrated replies from members arguing that the deal did not address their major concerns, most notably longer rest time between shifts. The announced plan would include a minimum of 54-hour rest periods on weekends and a daily rest period of 10 hours "without exclusions," according to IATSE's announcement.
