A vaccination campaign can generate enough defense to stop a virus from spreading in a community in a condition scientists call "herd immunity." Public health officials say the new coronavirus vaccines can ultimately bring the pandemic to an end.
But when will that happen? No one knows yet because so much about the virus remains unknown, so The Enquirer asked three specialists for their best estimates: Dr. Bruce Vanderhoff, chief medical director of the Ohio Department of Health; Dr. Stephen Feagins, chief medical officer for Hamilton County Public Health, and Dr. Carl Fichtenbaum, who studies infectious diseases at UC Health and oversees the local study arm for the Moderna COVID-19 vaccine.
This week, Vanderhoff sounded almost buoyant about the progress. “We are looking more on the order of weeks and months, rather than months or years," he said.
