KHSAA releases first basketball statistical leaders and RPI rankings

The Kentucky High School Athletic Association released its initial statistical leaders for the 2021-22 high school basketball season on Wednesday.

They also released the Ratings Percentage Index computer rankings for the state and each of the 16 regions. Unlike football, the RPI has no direct bearing on any postseason pairings in basketball, but can be used to compare teams.

Here is a look at the new numbers, which were collected on Wednesday. Any games played on Wednesday are not included.

RPI

In boys basketball, Simon Kenton (5-3) is fifth in the Eighth Region and 53rd in the state. Walton-Verona (5-4) is ninth in the region and 86th in the state.

In the Ninth Region, Lloyd Memorial (5-0) is first in the region and eighth in the state. Covington Catholic (9-1) is second in the region and ninth in the state. The rest of the top five is Cooper (7-2, 28th), Dixie Heights (6-1, 33rd) and Conner (7-2, 51st).

Covington Catholic guard Evan Ipsaro (2) and the Colonels are 9-1 this season and he is ranked among the state statistical leaders.

In the 10th Region, Calvary Christian (7-3) is fourth in the region and 117th in the state, and Campbell County (4-5) is seventh in the region and 130th in the state.

In girls basketball, Walton-Verona (6-4) is fifth in the Eighth Region and 100th overall, and Simon Kenton (6-6) is sixth in the region.

In the Ninth Region, Dixie Heights (9-1) leads the Ninth Region and is seventh in the state. Notre Dame (8-1) is second in the region and ninth in the state. The rest of the top five, in order, are Ryle (7-2, 17th), Conner (7-3, 33rd) and Cooper (6-3, 34th).

In the 10th Region, Bishop Brossart (5-2) is third in the 10th Region and 70th in the state. Scott (4-4) is sixth in the region.

Boys basketball leaders

Scoring: Jacob Meyer of Holy Cross is second in the state at 38 points per game. Grant County’s Dylan Hammonds is 11th at 25.6. Holmes’ Tez Calloway is 14th at 24.9 and Beechwood’s Cameron Boyd is right behind in 15th at 24.8.

Field-goal percentage: Simon Kenton’s Gabe Dynes is fourth at 77.8, and Dixie’s Billy Wogenstahl is eight at 72.2.

Free-throw percentage: Lloyd’s Teyon Neale is ninth at 90 percent (in 10 attempts. Conner’s Landen Hamilton is 20th at 87.9 percent in 33 attempts, and CovCath’s Evan Ipsaro is 22nd at 86.4 in 59 attempts.

3-pointers: Ryle’s Donovan Robinson leads the state with 37 made 3-pointers. CovCath’s Kascyl McGillis has 29 and Highlands’ Will Herald has 27.

Rebounding: Grant County’s Dylan Hammonds is 12th at 11.8 per game. Dayton’s Preston Baggett and Lorenzo Price are tied for 14th at 11.6 per game.

Team offense: Holy Cross is 11th at 76.7 points per game, CovCath 12th at 76.5 and Walton-Verona 15th at 75.6.

Team defense: Cooper is 12th at 49 points allowed per game, and Boone County 17th at 49.4, while Lloyd is 19th at 49.8.

Team field-goal percentage: Dixie Heights is second at 57.3 and CovCath fourth at 56.5.

Team 3-pointers: Ryle leads the state in 97 made 3-pointers and is fourth in percentage (41.8). CovCath is fourth in total threes at 76 and 12th in percentage (40.9).

Girls basketball leaders

Scoring: Newport Central Catholic's Rylee Turner is ranked first in the state at 33.4 points per game. Ludlow senior Jenna Lillard is second at 26.6. Cooper’s Whitney Lind is 27th at 19.5.

Field-goal percentage: Ryle’s Sarah Baker is 30th at 59.5 percent.

Free-throw percentage: Ryle’s Austin Johnson is 7th at 86 percent (37-43). Scott’s Madelyn Wilson is 15th at 83.3. Conner’s Anna Hamilton is 19th at 81.5.

3-pointers made: Dixie Heights’ Ella Steczynski and Simon Kenton’s Alexis Baker are tied for first in 3-pointers made with 34. Steczynski is fourth in threes per game at 3.4, and Baker 17th at 2.8. Ryle’s Abby Holtman and Conner’s Anna Hamilton are tied for 14th in threes made with 24.

Rebounding: Newport’s DeAyjan White is fourth at 13.3 per game. NCC’s Rylee Turner is fifth at 13.0 per game. Bellevue’s Deja Joseph is eighth at 12.2 per game and Ryle’s Quinn Eubank 10th at 12.0. NKY has five others in double figures: Scott’s Madelyn Wilson, Ludlow’s Jenna Lillard, Holmes’ Nejai Lewis, Simon Kenton’s Sereniti Webb and Holy Cross’ Julia Hunt, with Beechwood’s Alison Owen averaging 9.9.

Team offense: Dixie Heights is third at 67.8 and Ryle is 17th at 63.2.

Team defense: Newport is sixth at 32.5 and Ludlow eighth at 34.7.

Team free-throw percentage: Ryle is second at 77.5.

Team 3-pointers: Dixie Heights leads the state with 90 made 3-pointers.
