Cincinnati’s events to honor Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. will continue to take place on Monday, but this year things will look much different.“For us it was twofold how do you commemorate king and ensure his legacy continues to live and at the same time ensuring that you are keeping people safe,” Ericka King-Betts said.This is the 46th annual MLK Day in Cincinnati. King-Betts is a member of the MLK Coalition that has sponsors the citywide program. This year the coronavirus pandemic has created many challenges. “The coronavirus pandemic has challenged us to be creative and change how we safely bring our traditional march and program to the Cincinnati community,” King-Betts said.The morning program sponsored by at the National Underground Railroad Freedom Center will be a virtual event along with the afternoon program normally held at Music Hall.Christopher Miller with the Freedom Center said the Center will had to pivot to be safe and maintain safety guidelines.“We will not be open to the public that day to be responsible to our current situation with the pandemic,” Miller said.The annual King Day March through downtown also will have a new look for safety reasons.This year, in addition to marchers on foot, the MLK Commemorative March will include a Motorcade and will begin at the National Underground Railroad Freedom Center at 10:30 a.m., with participants’ cars following marchers along a designated route in downtown Cincinnati. Metro’s Rosa Parks Buses will provide limited seating.This year, participants are encouraged to be drive in a motorcade. In addition to marchers on foot, the MLK Commemorative March will include a Motorcade and will begin at the National Underground Railroad Freedom Center at 10:30 AM, with participants’ cars following marchers along a designated route in downtown Cincinnati. Metro’s Rosa Parks Buses will provide limited seating. After the March, our virtual 46th annual program, filmed at Music Hall, will premiere at 12:00 noon on the MLK Coalition website, www.mlkcoalition.org.
