MASON -The Mason High Schoo boys soccer program will be looking for a new head coach as Mike Combs has resigned for personal reasons. Combs made the announcement via Twitter on Sunday.
In three seasons with the Comets he was 43-9-4 and 26-1 in Greater Miami Conference games. Mason won the GMC all three seasons he was at the helm. They were district runners-up in 2018 and 2019 and district champs in 2020 as well as regional runners-up.
Combs was GMC Coach of the Year in 2018 and Co-Coach of the Year in 2019 with Sycamore's Brian Fallon.
Combs succeeded Paul Reedy in 2018 and was a former player at Mariemont and Northern Kentucky University. Reedy stepped down as head coach after the 2017 season. The Comets won the Ohio Division I state title in 2013. Prior to taking the top job at Mason Combs was head coach at Cincinnati State.
In his 14 seasons as head coach at Cincinnati State, his teams posted a record of 223 wins, 50 losses, and 13 ties. Combs led the Surge to 12 Ohio Community College Athletic Conference championships, three regional titles, two district titles and NJCAA National Tournament appearances in 2010, 2012 and 2013.
In those 14 seasons, the Cincinnati State program was ranked in the top 15 nationally and produced 16 All-Americans. Combs was named OCCAC “Coach of the Year” in 2003, 2004, 2005, 2007, 2009, 2010, 2011, 2013, 2015 and 2016. Combs also earned NJCAA Region XII "Coach of the Year" in 2010, 2012 & 2013.
Since joining the Ohio Collegiate Soccer Association in 2012, Combs earned "OCSA Coach of the Year" in 2012, 2013, 2014 2015 and 2016. The NSCAA named Combs as the 2013 "NJCAA - East Coach of the Year." Combs holds a USSF “C” National Coaching License and is a member of the National Soccer Coaches Association of America.
