Four conservation officers have been nominated for meritorious service awards after they helped rescue a man from a burning boat in Gallatin County.In a release, the Kentucky Department of Fish and Wildlife said an explosion happened Aug. 14 at the Craigs Creek Boat Ramp. It says a 34-year-old man from Crestwood, Kentucky, was the only person on the boat when the explosion sent the engine compartment cover airborne. It says he was backing his boat into the water at the time. The department says the man jumped into the water.The release says Sgt. Jason Ping gave the victim a fire extinguisher from his patrol boat after he and Conservation Officer Tory Bickers ran toward the fire.The award nomination says Conservation Officers Kurt Bulgrin and Christon Cornett "deployed their fire extinguishers , disregarding their own safety to put the fire out."The Department of Fish and Wildlife says the man suffered burns to his legs, arms and face. It says Officers Bickers, Bulgrin and Cornett soaked towels in water to put on his arms and legs, and an off-duty nurse at the scene helped them. Sgt. Ping requested EMS. The department says Officer Bickers stayed with the man and a distressed witness on the ground until AirCare arrived to fly him to the University of Cincinnati Medical Center.
