Cincinnati Reds’ Nick Senzel returned to injured list after sent down

Nick Senzel won't be playing for the Cincinnati Reds or the Louisville Bats this week. 

Senzel was returned to the injured list Thursday after multiple doctors examined his knee this week and he had fluid buildup from his arthroscopic knee surgery in May. There is no timetable for him to return to the field as he begins rehabbing at the Reds' spring training complex in Arizona.

"He deemed himself healthy for the five days prior to trying to come back," Reds general manager Nick Krall said. "At the end of the time, he was not healthy. He was trying to push through it and didn't want to say anything. We had him go see the doctor. He still has fluid in his knee, so he will be just put back on the IL."

Senzel hasn't played in the Major Leagues since May 17. He played in 10 games at Triple-A Louisville on his rehab assignment, which began July 30, and he had 10 hits in 35 at-bats with three doubles and a triple.

When Senzel told the Reds he was ready to end his rehab assignment – position players can spend a maximum of 20 days on a rehab assignment – the front office felt he wasn't ready to be an everyday starter at the big-league level and optioned him to Louisville on Sunday.
