Snow showers linger as dangerously low wind chills settle into Greater Cincinnati


Snow showers have moved out of the Cincinnati area, but don't put the shovels away just yet, because more snow is on the way this week. On the ground, temperatures were in the 20s. But thousands of feet up in the air, temperatures were hovering just above freezing. So what happened exactly? A teeny, tiny layer of warm air (32 degrees-plus) aloft melted snow after it left the cloud base, then another, deeper subfreezing layer of air froze it on the way down causing it to fall as sleet. Here are some of the snow totals as of Tuesday morning:CVG: 4.2 inchesHamilton: 5 inchesFairfield: 4.3 inchesSpringboro: 4.3 inchesLoveland: 3 inchesWilmington: 5.6 inchesMason: 3.5 inchesOxford: 6 inchesCheviot: 3.3 inchesCrittenden: 4 inchesFlorence: 2 inchesConnersville, Indiana: 9 inchesBatesville, Indiana: 5.5 inchesLawrenceburg, Indiana: 6 inchesGusty winds and mostly cloudy skies will linger through Tuesday with highs in the low 20s and lows Tuesday night dropping into the single digits. If skies are able to completely clear, and with light winds, some areas may make a run at zero degrees or possibly even dip below.Wednesday night into Thursday, a winter weather system will move into the Ohio Valley bringing with it a round of light snow. At this time, any accumulation should be light, around two to three inches for most areas. Highs Wednesday will reach the mid-20s with lows Wednesday night around 20. Highs Thursday will be in the upper 20s with lows in the mid-teens. Mostly cloudy and cold conditions will linger for Friday with some late day sun possible and highs in the mid-20s.We will finally head back closer to freezing on Saturday with some sunshine and highs around 30. Expect some rain showers on Sunday with highs in the upper 30s and possibly reaching 40 by Monday as our bout of arctic cold comes to an end next week.
