Why I became a journalist
It was what I wanted to be when I was a kid. My dad is a baseball columnist for USA TODAY. My mom was a copy editor for the Minneapolis Star Tribune and the Los Angeles Times before she started her sports photography business. I went with my mom to the Star Tribune’s office a couple of times and I thought it was the coolest place.
What I like best about my job
Baseball was always my favorite sport, so I’m fortunate to work in a field that I’m passionate about. As my grandfather often tells me, “You get paid to do what a lot of people would pay to do.”
A story I worked on that has had a lasting impact on me
I wrote a story about former Reds pitcher, and now broadcaster, Danny Graves last year. He was very open about his battle with depression as a player and a lot of the tough moments in his life. It was incredible how honest he was about everything, but it’s a good reminder that athletes (and people in all fields) can be going through tough battles beneath the surface.

What is the biggest challenge I face
Professionally, trying to keep people reading each story through a 162-game season, plus the offseason. Personally, my New Year’s resolution last year was practicing Spanish every day. I’ve come a long way, but I still have a long way to go before I’d consider myself close to fluent.

What I like to do when I’m not working
I started cooking a lot more after the quarantine first started, so that’s become a new hobby. I watch a lot of sports on TV and there are a few reality TV shows that I keep up with regularly.
Favorite event or Cincinnati/Northern Kentucky tradition
Western and Southern Open. I started playing tennis a few years ago and it’s incredible to watch the best of the best up close.
Why journalism matters
People in power and institutions need to be held accountable. In my first year working at a newspaper, another reporter unearthed a $1 million payment from the city for a no-bid infrastructure project that was unknown to the public. It was important oversight, led to more transparency and it was a good lesson about the value of watchdog journalism.
