The Miami Marlins could have landed former Madeira High School standout Andrew Benintendi in a three-team trade but instead opted to sign former Cincinnati Reds outfielder Adam Duvall, according to a report Tuesday from miamiherald.com's Barry Jackson and Craig Mish.
Here’s one thing that will be interesting to watch this season: Whether the Marlins’ Adam Duvall or the Kansas City Royals’ Andrew Benintendi produces bigger numbers.
That’s because the Marlins ultimately had a choice between the outfielders and opted for the one that didn’t require trade compensation.
According to a source, the Marlins could have had Benintendi as part of a three-team deal that would have involved the Marlins trading a position player, a veteran who isn’t assured of a starting spot.
Instead Miami opted to sign Duvall, who has more pop than Benintendi but much less consistency making contact. Benentendi had a .273 career average, compared with .233 for Duvall.
The report adds that the Marlins "plan to play Duvall 130 to 140 games in right field" in 2021.
The Marlins reportedly agreed to terms with Duvall last week on a big-league deal, but haven't announced it yet and he's not listed on their roster. Duvall has played for the Atlanta Braves since the Reds traded him in July 2018 for Lucas Sims, Preston Tucker and Matt Wisler.
Benintendi was dealt last week from the Boston Red Sox to the Kansas City Royals in a three-team trade that also included the New York Mets. He has played all five of his MLB seasons in Boston.
